Kia forte 2017

2017 Kia Forte

Last month Kia launched the 2017 Kia Forte Sedan and its sister Kia Forte5 Hatchback at the Detroit Auto Show. Now, a month later, the automaker is set to yet again showcase the new vehicles at the upcoming Chicago Auto show which runs from February 13th to 21st.

The Sedan has been upgraded with a tangible appeal that will make it more competitive against other competitors in the segment. The 2017 Kia Forte sedan will be the first model to be built on Kia’s new state-of-the-art plant in Monterrey, Mexico. The new model will be offered in three trim levels. A sporty S trim has been added to the lineup. It will sit between the entry level LX and the top EX trim.

Kia Forte 2017 Sedan

2017 Kia Forte Exterior

The new sedan has a sleek looking exterior which is inspired by its sister the 2016 Kia Optima. Just like its hatch sister, the Forte sedan will feature a tiger nose grille which has been stretched to touch it headlight edges. The LED headlights flanking it in turn stretch to touch the front fenders.

2017 Kia Forte5 Hatchback

The result of these modifications is a more fluid front appearance. The new appearance unites the Forte and Optima in terms of design language. At the back, the vehicle features redesigned taillights which feature LED lighting as optional for LX and S trims but LED is standard on the EX trim.

The new S trim features a sport-tuned suspension, LED DRLs, a rear spoiler and a chrome exhaust tip. The LX and S trims ride on 16-inch alloy wheels while the EX rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. The EX also adds perimeter approach lighting and front door pocket lighting.

2017 Kia Forte Interior

The LX and S trim levels will feature upgraded cloth upholstery on the seats. The S trim will feature exclusive black cloth with a white contrast stitching on the seats. The S trim’s shift knob and steering wheel will be wrapped in leather.

The top EX trim cabin is the most luxurious with leather seats, heated front seats with a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat which also features 2-position memory setting, push-button ignition with Smart key, a dual-zone climate control system and rear vents.

Both the S and EX trims will feature as standard a 7.0-inch color touch-screen UVO3 telematics infotainment system. The system integrates Smartphone functionality via Apple CarPlay TM and Android Auto. These platforms give the driver a more convenient access to music streaming, sending text messages and using the navigation system.

The vehicle also comes standard with a Driver Mode Select which allows the driver to change driving experience. The three driving modes are Normal Eco and Sport. For safety, the Forte features a bolstered package of airbags, traction and stability control as well as a host of driving aids such as front collision warning, ABS, lane keep assist, lane change warning, blind spot detection and rear-cross traffic alert.

Engine Specs

Under the hood, Kia has introduced a new engine to the sedan. The engine is a 2.0 L Atkinson’s cycle inline-4 that replaces the 1.8 L engine on the outgoing models. This will be the base engine on the LX and S trims. This engine will be paired with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission system.

There are no details about its output as of this writing; however, we expect the new engine to have a better output. The EX trim will still feature the 2.0 L GDI, 4-cylinder engine which will be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission system. We believe this engine will still produce 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque as in the outgoing model.

Acceleration, top speed and fuel economy specs are not yet out. Probably, the automaker will give updates on these specs during the Chicago Auto Show. Therefore make sure to check back for more updates on the new Kia Forte.

Price and release date

During the debut at Detroit, the automaker remained mum about the Forte’s official prices and release date. We understand that production starts in the first half of this year so expect sales to commence in the second half.

As for the price, we don’t expect it to change significantly from the current model prices. The current LX manual starts MSRP at $ 15,990 while the top EX trim has a $ 19,990 price tag.

The 2017 Kia Forte lineup gets a solid update this year to the 4-door sedan and 5-door Kia Forte5 hatchback. New styling makes the two look like miniaturized versions of the larger Optima sedan; this is a good thing. Under the hood, the base 1.8-liter engine has been replaced with a larger, but more fuel-efficient 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. And both the Forte sedan and Forte5 get upgrades to technology, including enhanced driver-assist systems, and a new infotainment system that incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Put it all together and you have a comprehensive compact-car lineup that goes head-to-head with the Honda Civic, Chevy Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3 and many others with multiple body styles, good looks and surprising levels of refinement.

The 2017 Forte lineup offers you a choice of practical 4-door or Euro-styled 5-door hatchback, each replete with a generous warranty, lots of standard features and a decent price.

You May Not Like This Car If...

While we love the sedan and hatchback's new looks and tech, the reality is that the Forte still comes up short when it comes to the kind of agility and power that gets enthusiasts' blood pumping. Also, those base prices are low, but they rise quickly as you add options.

How It Ranks

What's New for 2017

The 2017 Kia Forte sedan and Forte5 hatchback receive Optima-inspired styling this year. New driver-assist technology includes automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available. There's a new 2.0-liter base engine, a new S trim for the sedan, and a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for the SX mode. The Kia Forte Koup is no more.

Driving the Forte

Driving Impressions

Let's just get this out of the way first: Despite the available 201-horsepower engine available in the Forte5, this subcompact doesn't have the sporty chops to back up its looks....

... Enthusiasts should check out the Mazda3, Honda Civic SI, or Volkswagen Jetta or GTI for their fix. However, for the other 99 percent of drivers who just want a comfortable, feature-filled and sporty-looking sedan, coupe or hatchback, the Forte lineup is a solid choice. Around town and on the highway, the Forte sedan and hatchback are all excellent choices. Multiple creature comforts coddle driver and passenger alike, and even the base engine feels plenty powerful; the turbo is just gravy. The sedan’s added driver-assist technologies like automatic braking and lane departure warning sweeten the deal on a solidly economical daily-driver choice.

Favorite Features

APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTO Android Auto and Apple CarPlay bring the functionality and interface of your smartphone to your car's infotainment system. Just plug your phone's USB cable into the car's port, and you're set, bringing your phone's navigation, music, texting and other compatible apps to your car's dash.

While the Kia Forte5 may not have the sporting chops of the Volkswagen GTI, we're just glad Kia has remained committed to this small but fanatical market niche.

2017 Kia Forte Details

The interior doesn't look much different this year, retaining the logical controls and comfort, plus the whimsy of the passenger-side dash ripples. The soft-touch dash is exemplary of the overall quality of materials inside. EX models get standard leather this year, and there's also heating and cooling available, as well as a 10-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support. Even the rear seat offers a center armrest with cup holders, as well as a good amount of room for the class. Then there's the Forte5's excellent 23 cubic feet of cargo space, in case the sedan's 15-cubic-foot trunk isn't enough.

The new grille and headlights on the 2017 Kia Forte look like they're straight from the bigger Kia Optima sedan. Ditto for the taillights, which retain the original shape, but have been redesigned to look more like the larger car's. The Forte5 shares the same nose, but keeps its unique hatchback profile, obviously. Overall, it's a fresh and good-looking group of cars. The LED accent lights are a nice touch, and even with the updates, the overall conservative aesthetic remains, as do features like power-folding exterior mirrors, puddle lamps and illuminated door-handle pockets.

Notable Equipment

Standard Equipment

The new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder base engine in the Forte sedan/Forte5 hatchback offers the same power as last year's 1.8-liter but better city fuel economy with the popular automatic transmission. All Forte sedan and Forte5 hatchback models come with keyless entry, standard Bluetooth and USB smartphone connectivity, air conditioning and a split-folding rear seat. The base LX model Forte sedan is fairly dressed down, even offering steel wheels and a manual transmission. A new mid-level S model sedan offers nicer interior appointments at a lower price than the EX. A full complement of active and passive safety features is standard on every Forte.

Optional Equipment

Options for the 2017 Kia Forte lineup include navigation, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and Kia's UVO infotainment system. Most of that's included in the Forte's Premium Plus package, although leather is now standard on EX sedans. Many features are bundled by trim level, and the Forte5 models offer a level above the sedan called SX that adds a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 201 horsepower, as well as 18-inch wheels. A Technology Package adds navigation, heated and cooled seats, and other niceties like a power moonroof.

Under the Hood

The new base engine for the Forte and Forte5 is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are essentially the same as last year's smaller engine, but this engine gets notably better city fuel economy. It's standard in the LX and S models of the Forte sedan. The other 2.0-liter engine is a direct-injection 4-cylinder that puts out a more robust 164 horsepower, which is slightly down from last year. Transmission choices in the sedan are a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The Forte5 gets just the more powerful 2.0-liter, while the 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder can be paired with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

2.0-liter 4-cylinder (Kia Forte Sedan LX, S)

147 horsepower @ 6,200 rpm 132 lb-ft of torque @ 4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/34 mpg (manual), 29/38 mpg (automatic) 2.0-liter 4-cylinder (Kia Forte Sedan EX) 164 horsepower @ 6,200 rpm (ULEV-II) 160 horsepower @ 6,200 rpm (SULEV) 151 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm (ULEV-II) 149 lb-ft of torque @ 4,700 rpm (SULEV) EPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/33 mpg 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder (Kia Forte5 SX) 201 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm 195 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750-4,500 rpm

EPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/29 mpg (manual), 25/30 mpg (automatic)

Pricing Notes

Prices for the 2017 Kia Forte lineup start at about $17,300 (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price/MSRP) for the low-end Forte Sedan LX model with a manual transmission. That includes the $850 destination charge; an automatic transmission adds about $1,000 to the price. The new Forte Sedan S model starts at about $20,000, while the top-end EX sedan starts at $22,000. Prices for the Forte5 hatchback start just over $19,000 and can reach close to $27,000 for the powered-up SX version. That's a solidly competitive price structure for the compact Kia, right in line with offerings from Honda, a little above Nissan and Toyota, and a little below Mazda. Be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. On the resale front, the Forte models are expected to have below-average residual values.

At the North American Auto Show, Kia unveiled two of its Forte lineup models; the Forte5 2017 and Kia Forte 2017. The model is housed with updated engine and a new trim with some semi-autonomous technologies. Let us have a descriptive look at the review of Kia Forte 2017 to know in detail about it.

The interior of Kia Forte 2017 is very much similar to its 2016 sibling. First thing to notice inside the leather wrapped steering wheel mounted over the neatly designed dashboard. The LX and S trim levels come with seats wrapped in upgraded cloth while the S trim has the special essence through the black cloth wrapped seats with contrast stitching in white. Seats come with heating function and with 10-way electrically adjustable system. The EX trim is loaded with dual-position memory settings, dual-zone automatic HVAC controls, rear passenger vents and push button start with Smart Key. Talking about the standard features in S and EX trims, the buyers will get UVO 33 telematics, the newly designed company infotainment system. The tech is featured through the seven-inch touchscreen and it supports connection through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Thus rounding up the interior details of Kia Forte 2017 I would say, the primary focus has been executed commendably and the buyers will have a treat with these new features.

The exterior of Kia Forte 2017 is the place where you might notice minor changes. The first one that came across me was the extended ‘tiger-nose’ grille, which now touches the newly designed set of headlights. Beneath the setup you have pair of fog lights sitting close to the air vent and giving the front end the touch of aggression. The rear portion of the model has more pronounced lip for the trunk lid. The new set up of tail lights now feature dual-layer look and make the rear fascia look more appealing. Beneath buyers will get chrome exhaust tip while the same gets complemented by the spoiler mounted over the trunk. In all rumbling over the 16” wheels, exterior of Kia Forte 2017 looks luxurious and elegant.

Though the performance figures of Kia Forte 2017 are still not shared but we do know that beneath the hood will be two engine options. The LX and S trim level will come with an all new 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine mating to six speed manual transmission as standard. However the buyers will get the option of upgraded six-speed automatic transmission. The second engine beneath the hood of Kia Forte 2017 is with the EX trim level and it’s the ‘tried and tested’ 2.0 liter GDI four banger engine paired to six-speed automatic transmission as standard. We expect to have the power output figures of Kia Forte somewhere in 2017, close to its production release.

2017 Kia Forte Review - Global Cars Brands

2017 Kia Forte

Family sedans and hatchbacks are increasing day by day. The main reason lies in the inflating economy around the globe. Consequently, folks have started to peep into the fuel saving vehicles. As they are the best way to cut off your traveling expenses.

The economy friendly Pandora box has the Kia Forte in it. Well, it was introduced for the first time in 2008 for the model year 2009. Forte is actually the successor of Kia Cerato and Spectra. The Forte is the North American title of this car. While in its origin country, it is titled as K3. The Chinese love to call it Shuma, Columbians prefer Forte K3 and the Singaporeans stick with the Cerato Forte. A Malaysian automobile company, Naza, assembles this car for the Malaysian market. And it was called the Naza Forte.

The Europeans don’t get the Kia Forte. Instead, Kia markets the Cee’d over there. It has a similar drivetrain as that of Forte, but a different body style. Actually, Cee’d is the hot hatch.

The Kia Forte is presently running in its second generation. The first ended up in 2012. And the second generation was launched in the same year. For the year 2017, Forte has received some cosmetics improvements. However, the mechanics stay the same.

Forte is offered for as low as $16,600. Further, there are 3 models in this series, the LX, S and EX. The Kia Forte LX remains the base model, while the S goes for the sporty trim and EX is the exclusive one.

Hood of 2017 Kia Forte

Kia Forte gets a number of powertrains. Further, these powertrains are offered according to the regions.

The North American market gets the 2.0 L inline-4 engine with two variants. The first variant has 147 of power at 132 lb – ft of torque. The second one has 164 horses galloping at 149 lb – ft of torque.

The base engine is employed with the Multi-Point Injection (MPI). This is the standard fuel powering technology which is even witnessed in a number of 4-cylinder engines. However, the MPI is only available in the LX and S trims. The EX gets the Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) with 17 more horses. Ultimately it is the high-performance drivetrain of the Kia Forte.

Only the base model gets the manual transmission. The upper trims get the automatic transmission. Further, with this electronic transmission, Forte S is able to make the 0-62 mph run in 8.7 seconds.

Besides North American market, there are five other drivetrains available for the Kia Forte. The powertrains range from 1.6 – 2.0 L engines. The power rates between 128 – 201 hp. Front – wheel – drive stays the common driving configuration among all the models of Forte.

It was fine to the Kia Forte. During our tests, we revealed that the automatic transmission is pretty spontaneous than the manual. As it allows more torque to the engine to strike the track best. After crossing the first mark (62 mph) we experienced some growling sounds emitted by the engine.

Forte has a pretty domestic handling and grip. It took 181 feet to stop from 70 – 0 mph. Well, we received a combined average of 32 mpg which is around one and a half mpg lesser than what Kia narrates.

2017 Kia Forte Exterior

Kia Forte has received some major exterior changes for the year 2017. The head and taillights are reshaped. Further, the grille design is improved. And the face has been lifted. At the rear the there is a sleek decklid spoiler and a restyled chrome exhaust tip. However, Fog lamps, LED taillights and the chrome beltline are optional add-ons for the Forte.

Kia Forte is available in sedan, coupe and hatchback body style. The base model gets the 16-inch 5 spoke alloy wheel. The Sports and the exclusive trims get the 17-inch alloy wheels with a different designing.

This car looks much like a decent errand runner. It doesn’t look like a track dominator or the mountain climber. Indeed, it’s an urban fella.

Interior of 2017 Kia Forte

The windshield offers a pretty good vision of the outside. Cloth seat trims, contrast and accent stitching and leather wrapped steering wheels are some available ingredients of the interior. The leather seat trims are only available in the exclusive trim.

Moreover, the sunroof, heated power seats and upgraded center armrest are the optional facilities for the interior designing. The front row offers enough space to drive Forte comfortably. While we can’t question about the rear seats as it is a compact car. Do not expect your 6 feet height colleague to fit in the rear seats.

Well, Forte is an errand runner. Ultimately, it has 14.9 cubic feet of space in the trunk to carry the groceries.

Features of 2017 Kia Forte

The refined Kia Forte has got some improvement in its features section. It gets the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, the navigation, SiriusXM, Traffic and HD radio are optional features. Between the speedometer and tachometer is the driver cluster gauge. It is a 4.2-inch TFT screen.

An optional 4.3-inch touchscreen audio display is also available to control the music system of the car.

2017 Kia Forte Safety

The previous generation of Kia Forte had Poor safety. Actually, the small overlap frontal offset was weak. While the present generation earned the Good remark from the safety authorities.

The Forte has all necessary passive safety in place. However, the blind spot detection, lane change warning, rear cross traffic and forward collision warning features are available for the active safety of the car.

Subaru Impreza

The Kia Forte gets the competition from Subaru Impreza. Well, Impreza ranks higher than Forte. This is because of its steady suspension and powerful drivetrain. Otherwise, both the cars have almost similar interior and exterior.

If you are looking for an entry level sedan or a low priced errand runner, then Kia Forte is in business. Else, the options may expand.
